Guangzhou's formerly devastated quarries have now become beautiful scenery. Some have been built into scenic areas, residential districts or golf courses; some are used for the construction of factories, logistics zones, fish ponds or tourist facilities.
After years of effort, Guangzhou has shut down 1,195 quarries, 640 of which have undergone renovation and become covered with plants. The renovation of Guangzhou's quarries was completed on October 27, 2006, one year in advance of the provincial government's schedule. A total of 25.2107 million square meters of lands have become green areas, covered with 5.6294 million trees and 7.0724 million square meters of grass lawns. The total amount invested is RMB 650.691 million (municipal financial input over RMB 88.5 million).
