Starting June 5 next year, Shenzhen, Guangdong, will issue traffic-related air pollution index (API) every day to give residents an idea about how much impact the city’s vehicles are having on air quality.

Four roadside traffic pollution monitoring stations have been constructed and put into use, Sunday’s Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The Binhai roadside monitoring station was put into use Dec. 31, 2005, becoming the first monitoring station of its kind in China. The other three stations are located on Shennan Thoroughfare, on Nigang Road and in Nanshan District.

The stations collect data related to air pollution and noise pollution caused by traffic. Some of the data collected by the stations has been used to evaluate the impact of the greener China III fuels, after vehicles in Shenzhen started to use the fuels in April.

The Binhai and Nanshan monitoring stations have already started to use electronic bulletin boards to inform drivers about the day’s air quality and pollution level, the Daily report said.
