The State Food and Drug Administration said on Friday that measures have been taken to ensure ample and safe supplies of drugs in case of any health emergency during the Beijing Olympics.
The special reserves are held by the National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planning authority, and the People's Liberation Army, administration spokeswoman Yan Jiangyin said. Yan made the remarks at a press conference to launch China's first white paper on the Status Quo of Drug Supervision.
"All drugs and medical devices for the Olympics have been stored in a special warehouse," she said.
The administration has intensified its inspection and testing of drugs to ensure drug safety for Olympic athletes, she said, adding that all drugs and medical apparatus tested so far are qualified.
The National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products, and all the local institutes in Beijing and other host cities are ready to test drugs and medical apparatus for athletes, she said.
China has purchased 128 types of drugs and 322 medical instruments needed by Olympic athletes from qualified manufacturers in line with Olympic guidelines, she said.
After public bidding, Beijing Pharmaceutical Co became the exclusive distributor of drugs and medical apparatus for the Games' 22 designated hospitals, 31 Olympic venues and 43 exercise centers in Beijing and other host cities, Yan said.
